Invisalign aligners are the perfect smile solution for those who don’t want to deal with the hassle of traditional metal braces. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable and virtually invisible, meaning that your orthodontic treatment and oral hygiene are so much easier to manage while correcting crooked teeth and bite problems. (Oh, and did we mention that they’re also way more comfortable, too?)

However, Invisalign clear aligners aren’t totally hands-off. You’ll still need to take care of them and make sure you’re doing what you need to in order to straighten your teeth. This month, we’re going to go through a few of the things that are a must for patients starting the Invisalign process and creating a new smile. Take a look!

So, with all these options, how are you supposed to know what to choose?

Pura Vida Orthodontics is here to break down the choices and help you understand the different dental braces available for your care (and which may be the best for your needs!).

Know When to Remove Your Trays

With removable trays come responsibility. In order to protect your clear aligners, it’s important to know when you should take them out.

If you’re having a snack or a meal, simply remove your trays while you’re eating. You’ll also want to remove them if you’re putting anything in your mouth that has a color (like coffee or Gatorade) in order to keep them from staining or getting discolored.

Always remember to rinse your trays and to brush and floss before putting them back in! This will keep your beautiful smile healthy, preventing gum disease and tooth decay during treatment.

A Little Cleaning Goes a Long Way

We want to keep Invisalign clear aligners just that – clear! Your ability to discreetly straighten your teeth will be much harder if your trays get dirty or discolored.

Cleaning your Invisalign clear aligners will also keep your smile healthy. Bacteria and food particles can easily be trapped under Invisalign. Your aligners are perfect for getting straighter teeth – but you don’t want to get cavities and sore gums, too!

Make sure to clean your Invisalign clear aligners every day. During your Invisalign treatment plan (which could be less than a year!), you’ll need to soak them for 15 to 30 minutes and brush them with a clean toothbrush. Most patients use cleaning crystals or a homemade solution. Never use anything abrasive or with color or else you might damage or discolor your aligners.

Many patients like to set their trays up to soak while brushing and flossing, making it easier to remember!

The 22 (Hour) Rule

Getting a straighter smile requires keeping your clear aligners working hard most of the day. If you’re not wearing your Invisalign treatment, then it can’t move your teeth!

In orthodontics, the rule for Invisalign is that you need to keep your trays on for 20 to 22 hours every day in order for them to be effective. With proper care, your Invisalign treatment will help you achieve your dream smile!
